Mrs. Pauline A. Tewes was born February 11, 1870, in Read township, Clayton County, Iowa, daughter of Christian and Barbara Schmidt Hagensick. On March 13, 1870, she received the sacrament of Holy baptism and was confirmed into the Christian faith on March 18, 1883, by the Rev. E. W. Seifert.

On December 13, 1892, she was united in marriage with Henry W. Tewes. the couple lived on the Tewes homestead in Read township until 1902 when they moved to Elkader because of the poor health of Mr. Tewes.

To this marriage was born one daughter who died in infancy.

In 1942 the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and were blessed with nine more years together before death took Mr. Tewes in January of 1952.

She was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church and of its Women's Guild, being active in both until bodily infirmity forced her to restrict her activities.

For many years Mrs. Tewes has been handicapped in her walking ability due to a broken hip and for the past eight years has been confined to her wheelchair.

Advancing age and other complications confined her to her bed for the past four months until her death August 20, 1955, in her home in Elkader.

Remaining to mourn her passing are four sisters: Mrs. Sophie Possehl, Mrs. Emile Lenth and Mrs. Lenora Kurdelmeyer, all of Monona, and Miss Emma Hagensick of Elkader, besides many close relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 23, at 2 p.m. from her home, with the Rev. R. Jacobs officiating. Burial was in the Eastside cemetery. Pallbearers were: Lloyd Hagensick, George Heins, Everett Hagensick, Harvey Witte, Lorenzo Buckman and Albert Breitsprecher.
