William Walter Smock was born at Greeley, Iowa, October 06, 1882, the son of William Alexander and Emma Starr Smock. He attended grade school near Greeley in Delaware county, following which he worked with his parents and for others as a farmer.
He married Samantha Anna Durland, September 20, 1916, in Sperry township, Clayton county, the marriage being performed by a minister of the Christian church. Following their marriage, the couple lived on a farm in Sperry township, which has been their home for many years.
Mr. Smock had been in failing health for several years and suffered a stroke on Sunday night, July 31, remaining in a coma until his death around 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 02. The deceased worked at farming in the neighborhood of Volga and Arlington.
Surviving are two sisters, Julia (Mrs. George White) and Della Smock, both of Seattle, Wash. A sister Josephine died in infancy and a brother Frank died when a young man. Also preceding Mr. Smock in death was a sister, Mae (Mrs. Elmer Curler). Several nephews and nieces survive.
The funeral service was conducted in the Methodist church in Volga, at 2:00 p.m. Thursday August 04, by the pastor, the Rev. Frank C. Greene. Singers were Mrs. Oliver Follon and Miss Peggy Robinson, the accompanist, Mrs. Wallace K. Oldfather. Pallbearers were George Lane, Glen Moats, Glen Oldfather, Kirk Hicks, Oliver Follon and Clark Hummel.
Interment was in Hillcrest cemetery, Volga, Iowa.
