Funeral services will be held here Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, from Peace E. and R. church, for Harry J. Conrad, 65, retired Elkader business man who died Monday evening, June 20, at a Dubuque hospital. Interment will be in the East Side cemetery. The Rev. Paul Kitter, church pastor, will officiate.
Suffering from a heart condition, Conrad had been taken to Finley hospital, Dubuque, several weeks ago. He was returned to the hospital where he died about 9 o'clock in the evening.
Conrad was born in Chicago on April 11 1890. He was a son of Joseph and Augusta Witt Conrad. He received his early education in Chicago and then moved to Elkader in 1905. He was graduated from Elkader high school in 1909 and studied manual training at Menomonie, Wis.
After completing his education he taught Manual training in the local school for a number of years. He was also Elkader's first basketball coach.
After teaching for a time Conrad entered the grocery business and operated a store in the Wilke building, corner of Cedar and Front streets, for 20 years. He retired eight years ago.
He was married in Elkader on March 31, 1913, to Miss Jessie Wilke. Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Robert, of Cleveland, Ohio, and a daughter, Edith, at home.
He was a member of the Elkader Masonic lodge and of the Peace E. and R. church. During the eight years since his retirement from business he had been treasurer and custodian of the church.
