Clayton County Register, 05 May 1955.
Almira Talley, nee Schulte, daughter of William and Amelia Pahlas Schulte, was born Nov. 02, 1882, on a farm near National. She died at General hospital at Prairie du Chien, Wis., on May 01, 1955, having reached the age of 72 years, five months and 29 days.
She spent her girlhood on the farm but after her mother's death lived with her paternal grandmother in Elkader, where she attended high school. Later she made her home with Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Bayless while she clerked in the Bayless grocery store. When the business was purchased by Grant Talley she lived with the Talley family and continued her clerking duties.
In November, 1916, Almira was united in marriage with Mr. Talley and they farmed near Elkader until 1918, when they purchased a grocery store in LaCrosse, Wis. One year later they returned to the home town and bought a farm one and a half miles south of Elkader. There Mr. Talley died in April of 1934.
Mrs. Talley and her husband's grandson, Robert Gunderson, who had made his home with them after his mother's death in 1937, continued to farm until Robert moved to Ladysmith, Wis., in 1947. That same year her brother, William Schulte of Ft. Dodge, came to Elkader and has resided with her since that time.
Almira became ill about ten days ago and on Thursday of last week was taken to the hospital, where she suffered a diabetic coma. She never regained consciousness and died on Sunday morning.
She leaves to mourn her loss her brother, William Schulte, and three children by marriage, Mrs. E. C. Bandow of Elkader, Atwell Talley of Des Moines and Ray Talley of Sioux City. Besides the grandson, Robert Gunderson of Ladysmith, Wis., there are seven surviving grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Talley were held at the Witt Funeral chapel on Tuesday afternoon, with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating, and burial was at the East Side cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Chas. Stiehl, A. J. Meyer, John Miller, Raymond Meyer, Arno Wilke and Julius Pahlas.
