Samuel Withrow, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Oranoco, Minn., died Sunday evening at the age of 91 years. Mr. Withrow "Uncle Sammy" as he was later known, has been a patient sufferer for the past ten years, being confined to the house for the past seven months, with Brights disease.
Samuel Withrow was born at Uniontown, Pa., October 28, 1812. He received his education in the common schools of his native place, and left there at the age of sixteen to begin an apprenticeship as tanner and currier.
Failing health at the age of twenty-five years compelled him to abandon this trade, when, in partnership with his brother, Daniel C. Withrow, he engaged in mercantile business at Uniontown. Four years later they moved to Farrington in the same Co., where he served as postmaster and town treasurer.
In 1852, he in company with his brother settled on a farm near McGregor, Iowa. Here he followed farming three years then opened a store at Volney in company with H.D. Evans. In the fall of 1855 Messrs Evans & Withrow sold their store and removed their business to Orinoco, where the latter has since resided. This was the first complete stock of goods opened in the township.
Mr. Withrow never married, but during the latter years has resided with his nephew, Mr. and Mrs. James Withrow. - originally printed in the Oronoco, Minn. NEWS
Ed - Our older residents will remember Mr. Withrow. He lived an honorable life and died with the respect of all who knew him.
