~Elkader Argus, Wednesday, August 26, 1903; pg 5

Friday evening, Aug. 21st, occurred the death of William Monlux at his home in this city. Mr. Monlux had been failing in health for several years and had been confined to the house for a few weeks past.

Wm. Monlux was born at Delaware, Ohio, Dec. 6, 1833, and received his education in the common schools of that state. When 22 years of age, he came with his father to Clayton county, settling on a farm in Wagner township.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the famous Co. D, 21st Iowa Volunteers. He participated in all the battles of his regiment until the great charge at Vicksburg, May 22, 1863. He acted as color bearer in this battle and was severely wounded in the leg, laying for 64 hours without aid and spent seven months in a hospital. The wound incapacitating him from further service, he was honorably discharged in 1863. Ever since the wound has been a menace to his health and a continual cause of suffering.

He was married to Priscilla Froney June 19, 1864. Eight children were born to them of whom six are living, Laura M., Mary E., Chas. W., Delos D., William and Kate. Mrs. Monlux died about 14 years ago.

Mr. Monlux was always a man whom his fellow citizens would turn to when in search of one to entrust with public office. He served in the various township offices for years and in 1893 he was elected county supervisor, serving two terms.

About five years ago he came to Elkader to live and at the time of his death was a member of our town council. He was respected by all as an honest man, with all the traits of good citizenship. As a soldier, citizen and public official his work was well done.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Monday morning, Rev. G.W. Baxter officiating. Interment was at the U.B. cemetery in Wagner township. A delegation of Boardman Post G.A.R. attended and performed the ritual of the order at the grave.
