DIED - January 26th, 1863, in Hospital No. 2, near Murfreesburo, of wounds received in in battle on the 21st of December, Warren E. Sawyer, aged 19 years.
Such has been the fate of many of our brave boys who went forth in the strength of youth, and manhood, to battle for the continuance of one of the best movements the world ever knew; and while we [illegible] the war, deplore the [illegible] of sending our friends and brothers forth to disease - to death- we yet know that it is a necessity - that the sacrifice must be made - that we must sacrifice home, home comforts, friends, [illegible] even life itself, in the now impending struggle for liberty.
The deceased was a member of Monona Lodge, of the I.O. of O.F., and a true friend in the cause he advocated. The Lodge passed the following, unanimously:
Resolved, That in the death of our friend Warren, the cause of Temperance has lost a true friend and our Lodge a worthy Brother; as a member of our order, we know him to be an active, [illegible], working brother. As a friend, true, kind, and generous. One whose character would stand before the world, [illegible] by the ordinary vices to which so many of the young men of the present day are addicted, viz: Profanity and Intemperance.
Resolved, That we as a lodge offer to the parents, brother and sisters of the deceased our hearth. Its sympathy, in this their hour of sorrow, of bereavement. We know that it is in the home circle, that friends are truly missed; with them the mind is ever turning to the lost one, whose voice is stilled forever, whose eyes are closed in that last long sleep that maught, save [illegible phrase] ... must ever accompany the memory of him, that his life was given as a sacrifice to a noble, holy cause. The deceased was a resident of Monona, Clayton county, Iowa. -Monona, Feb. 28, 1863
