Volga: The death of Mrs. Anna M. Hurley, 78, occurred Thursday, Nov. 14, 1957, at 6:00 p.m., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Melville Handberg in Cedar Falls following a long illness.
Anna Marguerite, was born on 02, 1879, in Highland township, Clayton county, Iowa, the oldest child of Michael and Catherine McNeil Scully. She grew up in this community and before her marriage was a dressmaker.
On August 28, 1900, she was married to John J. Hurley. They farmed during their entire married life. Mr. Hurley preceded her in death in 1949; also a son, Martin Hurley in 1943, and a daughter, Evelyn in 1919, besides her parents, and a sister, Catherine.
Surviving are one son, Joseph of Volga; three daughters, Mrs. Harold (Irene) Smith, Waukegan, Ill.; Mrs. Gregory (Myrtle) Eischeid, Waterloo; Mrs. Melville (Hazel) Handberg, Cedar Falls; thirteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one sister, Miss Agnes Scully, two brothers, Michael and Daniel Scully, all of Volga, and other relatives.
Services were held Monday from the McTaggart funeral home in Elkader to Sacred Heart church in Volga at 9:30 a.m. The Rev. Karl J. Klein, pastor, was celebrant at the requiem high mass and officiated at the graveside in the church cemetery, where interment was made.
Casket bearers were: William Orr, James Myers, Michael Martin, James Boland, Volga; Paul Smith, Cedar Falls; and Lyle Van Doren, Waterloo.
The past several years, Mrs. Hurley resided in Waterloo with her daughter, Mrs. Eischeid, where she attended St. John's church. Previously, she was a member of the Volga Sacred Heart Catholic church, an active member of the women's organization, the Sacred Heart League, Alter Society and Association of the Miraculous Medal.
