Funeral services for Bert Mathews were held Thursday, Sept. 26, at 2:00 p.m. at the Witt funeral home. The Rev. Robert Jacobs officiated. Burial was in the Farmersburg cemetery with the Farmersburg Masonic lodge in charge.
Mr. Mathews died in a nursing home in Hammond, Ind., Tuesday morning, Sept. 24, 1957, following an illness of a year.
Bert Mathews was born on a farm near Farmersburg, Dec. 28, 1874, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Mathews. He received his education in the Farmersburg schools.
He was married to Anna Looby, and they made their home in Farmersburg, where he worked as a mechanic. Later they moved to Elkader, where for a number of years he was employed at the Allen Brothers garage. From Elkader they moved to Oelwein, where he was employed at the Wardell garage until retirement. He made his home in Oelwein until six years ago, when he went to Hammond, Ind., to live with his son, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Mathews.
Mr. Mathews is survived by his son, Vincent of Mammond, Ind.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Robert Woods, and two great-granddaughters of Vermillion, S.Dak. Also a sister, Mrs. Les (Dora) Lehman, Elgin; two stepbrothers, James Mathews, Farmersburg; Leigh Mathews, Cedar Rapids; two stepsisters, Mrs. Louis (Ruth) Radloff, and Mrs. Wm. (Gladys) Reardon, both of Farmersburg.
Preceding him in death were his wife, and three daughters, Mary, who died in infancy, Veronica and Mrs. Syd (Amy) Ramsey; a sister, Cora, (Mrs. Witt) of Monona, and a stepbrother, Glenn, who died while serving in the armed forces overseas during World War I.
Mr. Mathews was a member of the Presbyterian church in Oelwein, and the Masonic lodge at Farmersburg, of which he was a 50-year member.
Pallbearers were: George Radloff, Arthur Hinsch, Charles Hinsch, Carl Gall, Herbert Thorsen and Hale Corlett.
Those from a distance attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Mathews, Hammond, Ind.; Mrs. Robert Wood, Vermillion, S.Dak., and Dwayne Tonne of Bensonville, Ill.
