Funeral services for James R. Humphrey, 50, were held Monday morning from St. Joseph Catholic church with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. A. Gorman officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery. Humphrey died, May 24, in Oelwein Mercy hospital following an illness of several years.
He was born in Elkader on New Years day, 1907, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Humphrey. He was educated in St. Joseph school in Elkader, Loras college, Dubuque, and Marquette university, Milwaukee, Wis. Prior to his illness Humphrey had been and insurance adjuster in Chicago.
A member of the Holy Name Society, Humphrey was also a member of Lembke-Stendel Post No. 10_ of the American Legion, having served as a sergeant in World War II.
Surviving are two brothers, Gregg J. of Chicago, Ill., and John P. of Elkader. He also leaves three sisters, Kathryne Humphrey, Mrs. A. J. (Donna) Johnson and Mrs. V. J. (Virginia) Stence, all of Elkader. A brother, Raymond L. preceded him in death.
Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Eugene Foote and son Brian of West Union, and Mrs. Melvin Wareham and son William of Oelwein.
Pallbearers were: R. J. Hyde, Harold Frick, Joe Evans, A. L. Davidsaver, J. E. Shaffer and M. L. Ponsar. Alter boys were: Alan Hyde and James Powell. Johnson Johnson, Michael Stence, John and Stence are nephews of the deceased.
