Death of Miss Emma Grannis
Several years ago there lived in Dubuque a family of three --- Mrs. Grannis, her son, best known as "Mina" Grannis, and her daughter, Miss Emma Grannis.Mr. Grannis was a physician; the son was at that time express agent on the Dubuque and Sioux City railroad, but has since become a physician; and Miss Emma left Dubuque to go east to study medicine, to fit herself for a physician and a lecturer on physiological topics.
Their residence before coming here was Strawberry Point. After leaving here, the family was separated for a season, but finally reunited at Charles City. This is but the meager outline of a history, the details of which, to an extent involving far more than ordinary interest, might be filled in from the memory of some who are still residents of Dubuque.
Last fall Miss Grannis, finding her health failing, left Charles City to seek for health beneath the balmier skies of California. But the change faied to benefit her, and she gradually grew worse. Her brother at Charles City was telegraphed for, and hastened to her bedside, arriving but a few days before her death at the age of 25 years.
The Charles City ADVOCATE contains the following notice and comment:
Miss Emma Grannis, formerly of this city, died at Visalia, California, on the evening of June 13th, at 8 o'clock. In a letter to S.P. Leland, Dr. Grannis says: "She passed to the other shore quietly, peacefully and beautifully. She was patient to the last and bore her sufferings without a murmur."Miss Grannis will be remembered by many of our readers as a bright intelligent lady, of rare culture and sweetness of manners. She was, we believe, a graduate of some medical college. she was, while living here, fitting herself for a physician and lecturer, and her future was full of promise to one so young and gifted
