Clayton County Register, 07 Feb. 1957.
Funeral services for George J. Meenan, 59-year-old Read township farmer, were held Sunday afternoon, Feb. 03, at 2 o'clock, from Peace Evangelical and Reformed church in Elkader. Burial was made in East Side cemetery. The Rev. Paul Kitterer, pastor, officiated. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Witt funeral home.

A blast from a 12-guage shotgun had torn away his face and forehead. Authorities believed that he had been dead for several days. Acting Coroner Ray Barton returned a verdict of death from a self-inflicted gun shot wound.
Meenan was believed to have been despondent since the death of his wife, which occurred on January 12. He was also preceded in death by a daughter.
Surviving are one brother, Ferdinand, of Read township and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Tackman and Mrs. Margaret Tackman, of Clayton, and Mrs. Ernestine Kruse of Elkader.
