DIED - Near Strawberry Point, Feb. 12th, 1880, John Balluff, aged [blank].

The deceased was an old resident of this vicinity and was an honest and upright citizen. For a number of months past he has been in poor health and a few weeks ago it was thought the end was near at hand, but he rallied, and a few days ago was up and around, but death had marked him for its victim and he was again taken down and was released from earthly sufferings on the above date.

His remains were interred in the cemetery at the County Corners last Saturday.

~Strawberry Point Press, Wednesday, February 18, 1880; pg 3

Note: Although not mentioned in his obit, Mr. Balluff served in the Civil War, Co. H, 16th Iowa. He was a prisoner in Andersonville for 2 months. The military stone marking his grave spells his surname incorrectly as BOLLOF.
