Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Mentzel were held Monday afternoon, September 01, at 1:30 at Witts funeral chapel and at 2:00 o'clock at the Frieden's Evangelical church with the Rev. J. P. Kitterer officiating. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery.

Mrs. Mentzel was born in Cox Creek township, this county, June 04, 1871, and died at Independence, Iowa on August 29, at the age of 70 years, two months and 25 days.

Mrs. Mentzel was the daughter of Peter and Harma_ (Borman) Broel. She grew to womanhood in the township of her birth and attended the schools there.

February 03, 1892, she was united in marriage with Richard Mentzel here at Elkader, and five children were born to this union. One son, Richard, preceded his mother in death. The four surviving children are: Clarence Mentzel of Elkader, Mrs. Carrie Hicks of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Florence Schrampfer, Elkport, and Max Mentzel, Elkader. Her death is also mourned by two sisters, Mrs. _____ _____, of Elkader, and Mrs. Wm. Breitsprecher of ___ ______, Iowa, as well as _____ __________.
