Clayton County Register, 27 Aug. 1941. Volga column.

Mrs. Marion Duff Smith, daughter of Mary Jane and John Duff, was born on June 23, 1872 in Sperry township, Volga, Iowa.

She was educated in the Blocher School and took her normal training at the Washington Seminary, Washington, Kansas. After completing her education she taught school for ten years in Kansas and one year at the Pioneer School at Addy, Washington.

She was joined in holy wedlock to Fred J. Smith on February 14, 1901, at Elkader, Iowa. To this marriage one child, Mary Jane, was born. On September 10, 1916 she became a member of the Volga Presbyterian Church by letter from the Blocher Baptist Church of Haddam, Kansas.

Mrs. Smith passed away at her home in Volga, Iowa, on the evening of August 22, 1941. Surviving are her husband, Fred J. Smith, one daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane Parker; two grandchildren, Marion and Frederick Parker; one brother Bert Duff of Addy, Washinton; also four nieces and two nephews of Albert, Canada, beside many other relatives.

She strove to be a wife, mother and friend __ high Christian ideals, passing on to others the happiness of living those ideals. She leaves us with the comforting thought that even though she has crossed the bar and has attained the promise of Christ Jesus when he said; "Come unto Me and ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest," she is not dead but sleeps in eternal peace.

Funeral services were held on Monday in the Volga Presbyterian Church in charge of Rev. Russell Nelson. Mr. Albert Kunzman sang the solo, "Face to Face," and Mrs. Robert Duff sang "Crossing the Bar." Burial was made in the Hillcrest Cemetery. The pallbearers were: A. F. Robinson, C. Z. Potter, H. E. Whitford, Kenneth Duff, Claude Miles and Fred Dempster.
