Mrs. Caroline (Eberhart) Ernst, formerly of this place, died April 09, 1941, in Eugene, Oregon, at the home of her son following an illness of 13 months.

As the daughter of Peter and Leopoldina Eberhart, she was born on a farm near Littleport in Volga township on December 15, 1862. Her age, at the time of death, was 78 years, three months and 24 days.

July 18, 1890, she was united in marriage with Michael Ernst at Littleport. He died in the year 1898. Two children were born to this union - Peter and Matilda.

Part of her life was spent in Chicago and North Dakota but for many years she cared for her aged mother here in Elkader. In 1938 she went to Eugene, Oregon to make her home with her son, where she died.

Surviving are the son, Peter A., of Eugene, Oregon; the daughter, Mrs. Mathilda White of Chicago, Ill., as well as one sister - Mrs. Mathilda Meyer of Beach, N.D., and two brothers - Adolph Eberhart of Elkader, and Frank Eberhart of Prairie du Sac, Wis., also six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church, here, Monday forenoon and burial was made in St. Joseph's cemetery, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. P. Taken officiating.

Casketbearers were: Henry Benschneider, Mike Miller, Wm. G. Allen, H. M. Wolf, George Kelpien and Lester Vogt.

Relatives from a distance who attended the services included: Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Ernst of Eugene, Oregon; Mr. and Mrs. A. J. White, Chicago, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Eberhart, Prairie du Sac, Wis., and Mr. and Mrs. John J. Laux, Chicago, Ill.
