-Excerpts from letters published in Army Correspondence columns, Weekly North Iowa Times, 5/13/1863: "Since my last, death has again visited our camp, and taken from amongst us two of our brave hearts, by disease, Charles H. Read and Leroy K. King [sic]. They were both faithful, good men, and highly esteemed by every member of the company. We all mourn their loss and deeply sympathize with their dear friends and relatives." - Thos. G. Drips (4/23/1863)
"The health of our regiment is tolerably good, but since my last letter we have lain two from Co. E, in their last narrow bed, viz: Charles H. Reed and Levi R. King. Their losses will not alone be felt deeply at home, we miss them here in the camp and on the march, there is something in a soldiers life which knits men together and makes them feel the loss of a comrade deeply." -written by "You Know Who" (4/29/1863)
Notes:
-I believe Leroy K. King should read, Levi King. I could find no evidence of a Leroy King in Co. E, 27th IA
-Buried Corinth Nat'l Cemetery, Corinth, MS
