Mrs. Matilda Uriell died at her home in Read township Sunday morning, Oct. 31, 1948, at 12:55 a.m. Mrs. Uriell was in failing health for the past year, but was able to be around and enjoy her home and companionship of her family and friends until the past few weeks when she was confined to her bed.
Matilda Brannon, the daughter of Owen and Rose Brannon, was born at St. Rose, near Waucoma, Iowa, Jan. 12, 1873. She attended the schools in that community and on Nov. 22, 1898, was married to Joseph C. Uriell of Elkader, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel church in Lawler. Her entire married life was spent on the Uriell farm in Read township.
Seven children were born to this union, Stella, Zita, and Virgil, at home, Mrs. Joe (Coletta) Kister, Garnavillo, Mrs. Joe (Madonna) Collins, Elkader, Don D. Uriell, Monona, and James Joseph Uriell, deceased.
She was a member of St. Joseph church.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, four daughters, two sons, eight grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Babasin of Chicago.
Funeral services were held at St. Joseph church Wednesday morning, Nov. 03, at 10 o'clock. The Very Reverend B. A. Skahill offered requiem high mass and also officiated at the grave.
Casket bearers were: John Uriell, Guttenberg; Merle Costigan, Lawler; John Miller, Lloyd Meyer, Loren Frommelt, Elkader; and Elias Hall, Elkport.
