LITTLEPORT: Mrs. Viola Hughes, daughter of Emeline and Elliott McLane, pioneers of this county, was born on a farm March 05, 1859, near Strawberry Point, where she grew to young womanhood, and died in her home in Littleport Friday evening, July 16, at 6:15 o'clock after a lingering illness at the age of 89 years, four months and 11 days.

On Sept. 22, 1880, she was married to Burrows Hughes and lived in this community her entire life. Two children were born to them, a son Elmer who died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Ella Becker, who survives and who has resided with her mother for the past 30 years. Other survivors are three grandchildren, Dan Becker of Flint, Mich., Mrs. Inez Becker White of Wadena, and Mrs. Dorothy Becker Kratz of Burlington; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband 11 years ago, one son, her parents, and two brothers.

She was Littleport's oldest resident.

Funeral services were conducted from the home Sunday afternoon at five o'clock with the Rev. Butler of Strawberry Point in charge, and burial was in Union cemetery.

Pallbearers were Louis Winch, Roy Ruegnitz, Chas. Reichart, Wm. Ortman, George Chettinger, and Ray Hughes.
