Nesteby, Nels 1866 - 1948

Funeral services for Nels Nesteby, 80, were held at the Norway Lutheran church in Wagner township on Saturday, June 26, 1949. Dr. S. J. Strandjord officiated. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Nesteby had been in ill health for some time, having suffered several strokes within the last 10 years of his life. He died June 23, 1948, having been hospitalized for more than a year.

Nels Nesteby was born near Echo, Minn., September 09, 1866. He was married to Ingred Docken at Sacred Heart, Minn., in July 1890. They farmed a number of years near Echo, Minn., later moving to Sacred Heart, Minn., where they spent several years. They then moved to Montevideio, Minn. There his wife died on Aug. 04, 1911. He then brought his family to St. Olaf, Iowa, where they lived for some time.

His later years he spent as helper at the Ole Embretson home near St. Olaf. Then as illness overtook him he visited among his children, spending the last five years with his eldest son, Alfred, and family on a farm near Decorah, Iowa.

Surviving are nine children, namely, Alfred and Albert of Decorah, Mrs. Mable Olson and Mrs. Mayme Embretson, both of St. Olaf, Mrs. Ida Jones, Waukon, Carl of Dubuque, Elmer of Marshall, Minn., Mrs. Emma Lantz, Elkader, and Mrs. Inga Baker, Waterloo, all of whom were present at the funeral; also 36 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death besides his wife were: a son, Theodore, who died Oct. 14, 1942, and a daughter, Mrs. Henry (Alma) Johansen, who died Jan. 15, 1944.

Pallbearers were: Alfred, Carl, Elmer and Albert Nesteby, Harvey Jones, and Leslie Lantz.
