DIERS, SCHNEIDER, BEST, KOSS, MILLER, HAGENSICK

Clayton County Register, 24 June 1948.

Funeral services for Henry H. Diers, 74, were held from the family home in Read township at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday, June 15, to the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church in Clayton Center at 2 o'clock. The Rev. J. H. Zerhusen officiated. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Diers died at his farm home early Saturday evening, June 12, 1948, of a heart ailment. He had been in ill health for the past two years.

Henry H. Diers was born Nov. 20, 1873, the son of Fred W. and Margaret Schneider Diers. He was born and lived his entire life on the same farm. He is of the fourth generation to have lived and died on the farm.

As a child he was baptized and confirmed by the late Rev. F. W. Seifert of Clayton Center. He received his education in the rural schools near his home. On Mar. 06, 1900, he was married to Miss Emelie Best at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church in Clayton Center by the pastor, the late Rev. Seifert. Three children were born to this union, Mrs. Arno (Alice W.) Koss of Garnavillo, Willis F. of Elkader, and Vernon W. on the home farm.

Mr. Diers was a farmer and breeder of purebred cattle and hogs. He served as a director of the St. Olaf bank, the Elkader fair board, and was a township trustee. He was secretary of the school district for 35 years and for many years he was president of the Communia Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He was a lifelong member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran church at Clayton Center and served as treasurer and on the building committee. He was also a member of the church council at various times over a period of years.

Surviving besides his wife and three children are two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Miller and Miss Alma Diers, both of Elkader; also seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mrs. Freda Hagensick, who died in 1943, and a sister and brother who died in infancy.

Pallbearers were: Willis F. Diers, Vernon W. Diers, Arno Koss, Don Koss, Amos Hagensick, and Milton Hagensick.

Honorary pallbearers were: Roy Hyde, Fred Orvis, Louis Palas, Pat Connelly, Herman Dettmer, W. W. Davidson, Fred Seifert, and Ole Embretson.

Caring for flowers were: Mrs. Gilbert Barnhart and Mrs. Karl Walters.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Milton Hagensick, Rutherford, N. J.; Mr. and Mrs. Al Knueppel and Miss Anna Schmidt, Milwaukee, Wis.; John Brandt, Mrs. Irene Ostlie, Castalia; Mr. and Mrs. Arno Engelhardt, Postville; Mrs. Lenora Kurdelmeyer, Mrs. Emelie Lenth, Arno Dickman, Monona; Mrs. Freda Landt, Luana; Arno and Arthur Buckman, Farmersburg; Mrs. Clementine Eggerth, Spokane, Wash.; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Suckow, Postville; Mrs. R. R. Ruesser, Monona; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Schulte, Mrs. Addie Jacobs Bayman, Mrs. Johanna Taake, Guttenberg; Mrs. A. F. Meier, Miss Kathryn Wedemeyer, and Richard Meier, Nashua.
