Thomas Duff, 77, died Monday evening about nine o'clock at is home following a long illness. For several years his sister, Mrs. Celia McKeen, has cared for him, as he was bedfast for the past three and one-half years. His sister is the only close relative who survives. There are many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Thomas Duff was born November 17, 1870, on the old Robert Duff homestead in Highland township.

He was the youngest child of Isabella Probert Duff and Robert Duff. Both parents came from Scotland.

There were ten children in the family, one of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Celia McKeen, a sister, is the only surviving member of the family.

Thomas Duff and his brother Rob farmed the old Duff farm until Rob's death in 1937. His sister Marion kept house for him until her death in 1926. Mr. Duff was unmarried.

A number of years ago, while doing his farm work, he accidentally broke his leg, later, infection set in, and he was in one hospital after another until the leg was finally healed.

In 1938, he and his sister Sarah Roys moved to Volga. In 1941, Sarah, who had nursed him through his former illness, again cared for him after a stroke. He was able to be about when she died in 1942.

His sister Celia McKeen came to be with him then, and cared for him when he was a total invalid from August 1944, until his death January 19, 1948.

Mr. Duff was a member of the Presbyterian church, and an officer there for many years.

Services were conducted Friday at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian church, with the Rev. Ben Cochenet, pastor, in charge. Mrs. R. W. Duff, pianist, was assisted in singing two hymns "Close to Thee" and "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" by Robert and John Duff. Floral tributes were arranged by Mrs. Cecil Duff and Mrs. Fred Gerand.

Pall bearers were Atty. E. R. O'Brien, Oelwein; P. H. Quinn, Strawberry Point; David Dempster, Arlington; John Seago and Andrew Yearous, Elgin; Wm. R. Smith, Volga.

Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga.

Among the relatives and friends present at the last rites were: Kenneth Duff, Cook, Wash.; Mrs. A. R. Kraft, Mapleton; Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Larson, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Muncie, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Yearous, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Yearous, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Herman, John Seago, Elgin; Ed Livingood, Elkader; Will Christen, St. Olaf; Mr. and Mrs. George Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Smith, Milton Duff, Mr. and Mrs. David Dempster, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dempster, Arlington; E. R. O'Brien, Oelwein; P. H. Quinn, Strawberry Point; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Tschantz, Wadena; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Davis, West Union; John Zuercher, Lamont; Mel Poys, Wadena; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Weston, Lamont.
