Elsie Maude Adams, the oldest daughter of Charlie and Violetta Adams, was born Jan. 09, 1881 at Volga, and died Friday, Jan. 16, 1948 at Volga, at the age of 67 years and one week.
She was married to Charles Upton Oct. 03, 1906. They went to Murdo, S.Dak., and lived there four years, then came to Elkader and rented a farm where they lived a few years. In 1915 they bought a farm near Volga and have lived around Volga for the rest of their lives.
Two children were born to them, one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Mae Cummings, and a son, Charles Henry Upton, both living at Volga.
A week ago, Mrs. Upton suffered a light stroke and was taken to the home of her daughter, so that all care possible could be given her, and Wednesday she had a second stroke which led to her death.
Mrs. Upton was active in church affairs, the Ladies Aid, and was a member of the Royal Neighbors lodge.
Surviving besides her husband and children are two brothers, David William Adams, Rockford, Ill., Walter Franklin Adams, Fayette; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Henrietta Bennett, Jefferson, Ore., and Mrs. Phoebe Marble, Volga, four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church, with the Rev. _. _. Faris in charge. Mrs. C. W. Kohls and Mrs. Leo Grether, with Mrs. W. K. Oldfather, pianist, provided the music. The floral offerings were arranged by Mrs. F. P. Gernand and Mrs. C. W. Duff.
Casket bearers were John Biedermann, Don Leete, Ray Leete, David Hol_man, Wm. Christele_ and Robert Boleyn. Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga.
