Military funeral services were held for Clem Whittle, 55, at Sacred Heart church in Littleport, Monday morning, January 12, at 9:30 o'clock. The Rev. L. M. Holmberg officiated. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery, Elkader, with the Lemka-Stendel Post of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in charge of the military services.
Mr. Whittle died at Mercy hospital in Dubuque, Thursday, Jan. 08, following an eighteen days' illness. Death resulted from complications following an emergency appendectomy.
Clem Earl Whittle was born in Cox Creek township, Aug. 24, 1892, the son of John and Julia Cunningham Whittle. He received his education in the rural schools near his home. He was married to Miss Elsie Kopp at Littleport, March 29, 1921. They started housekeeping on a farm near Communia which has since been their home.
He was a veteran of World War I, having served with the 88th Division in France. He was a member of Lemka-Stendel Post of the American Legion and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and of the Sacred Heart church of Littleport.
He is survived by his wife, four sons and one daughter, Earl, Bernell, Malcolm, and Norbert, all at home and Mrs. Dale (Edythe) Peck, Cedar Rapids; six brothers and two sisters, John of Arlington, Emmett and Ambrose, both of Elkader, Alphonso of Harpers Ferry, Sylvanus of Strawberry Point, Leo of Minneapolis, Minn. Mrs. Hattie Matt of Strawberry Point, and Mrs. Geo. (Blanche) Blancholm, Minneapolis, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Joe, and two sisters who died in infancy.
Pallbearers were Arno Gottschalk, George Tieden, Ferd Meehan, Henry Klink, Otto Schmeltzer, and John Leonard.

Blancholm and Miss Marian Blancholm, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Whittle, Harpers Ferry; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Whittle, Monona; Mr. and Mrs. John Whittle, Arlington; Mr. and Mrs. Sylvanus Whittle and family and Mrs. Hattie Matt, Strawberry Point.
