Gemmill, John died 1863

GEMMILL, CALDWELL

DIED - May the 14th, of sun stroke, while on a march from Grand Gulf to Jackson, Miss. Corp. John Gemmill, Co. I, 9th regiment Iowa Vol. Infantry; aged 18 years, 1 month and 23 days.

The deceased was born in Kilbarrhan, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and was a faithfull, active soldier in the cause of the Union. Enlisting as a private he has shared the dangers, privations, and triumphs of the brave Iowa soldiers, laying down his life for the preservation of the country of his adoption, from the attacks of those who would sap its foundations, and thus overthrow the superstructure.

Note: Unknown if he's actually buried in the Monona City cemetery, but he has an inscription on the gravestone of his parents William & Janet (Caldwell) Gemmill.
