The funeral of the late Seymour Chipman, a well known resident of Corvallis, is to occur tomorrow, Sunday afternoon, after an illness that was not considered serious but a day or two. Monday, he was seen on the streets of Corvallis, but on Tuesday he was indisposed and remained at home. The same was true on Wednesday until late in the afternoon when his condition became much worse Thursday morning he was unconscious and his symptoms such that his physician notified the family that the end would not be long postponed. It came at 2:45, and was the result of heart disease. For the past two or three years, Mr. Chipman has not been in good health.

The deceased was Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masons of Oregon. He was Past Master of the Corvallis Council of Masons, in which he served two terms as Master. He was a Knight Templar and a member of the Mystic Shrine.

He was several times commander of the local G.A.R. post, and he served a term as junior commander of the department of Oregon, G.A.R.

He was an excellent citizen, and his death is sincerely mourned by a wide circle of friends, in Corvallis and at points where he is widely known and highly esteemed in the east. The arrangements for the funeral were to have been perfected by Corvallis lodge A.F. & A.M. at a meeting to have been held in the hall after the TIMES went to press last night.

Burial service will be by the Masonic fraternity and there will probably be an escort of Knights Templar.

Seymour Chipman was born at Essex, Vermont, June 30th, 1833. At the age of ten, he accompanied his parents to Illinois, making the long trip by private conveyance. After completing his education in the district schools he assisted his father at farm work for several years.

In 1852 he went to Iowa where he was engaged successively in the saw mill, flouring mill, carding mill and woolen mill business.

In August, 1862, he enlisted in Company B, 21st Iowa Infantry, and was elected fifer of the regiment. He took an active part in many important engagements, among them, the memorable Port Gibson, May 1st, 1863, and the siege of Vicksburg, which concluded with the capitulation of the fort July 4, 1863.

The following month Mr. Chipman was seized with a serious illness, and was transferred to the veteran reserve corps with which he was actively engaged until the close of the conflict, serving in the commissary department at Camp McClelland, Davenport, Iowa. June 28th 1865 he was mustered out the service and returned home.

After the war, Mr. Chipman engaged in blacksmithing at Strawberry Point, Iowa, in which he continued until 1881, when he went to Gilmore City, Iowa, where he remained until 1893. In the latter year he came to Forest Grove, Oregon, where he purchased a home and resided for two years. In 1893 he came to Corvallis where he has since resided.

August 14th, 1853, Mr. Chipman was united in marriage to Miss Prudence Maxon. the two were the parents of five children, Mrs. Eva Moyer, of Gilmore City, Iowa; Charles and Clarence Chipman and Mrs. F.L. Miller of Corvallis; and Mrs. Simpson, of Portland. All were present at the death except Mrs. Moyer.

The golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Chipman was celebrated at the family home in this city August 14th, 1903.

Mr. Chipman became a member of the Masonic fraternity at Strawberry Point, Iowa, in 1862, and was deeply and enthusiastically devoted to the order in which he was a member of the highest standing. He was mayor or Gilmore City, Iowa, at the time of his removal to Oregon.

His death exalts O.A. Dearing to the position of Grand Master of the Grand Council, Royal and Select Masons of Oregon.
