STRAWBERRY POINT: Dr. Hal M. Eaton, 73, died at his home here Saturday following a long illness. He spent the past several months in hospitals in Dubuque, Rochester, Minn., and Oelwein.
Son of Dr. Adelbert and Ellen Renwick Eaton, he was born at Strawberry Point, April 08, 1873. The father, also a dentist, was one of the pioneer representatives of his profession in Clayton county, coming to Strawberry Point in 1855.
Dr. Hal Eaton gained his early education in the public schools here and when 14 years old found employment in a drug store where he worked for three years then began the study of dentistry by working with his father. Later he entered the dentistry department of the State University of Iowa, graduating from that institution in 1895, and has practiced continuously here since that time until ill health forced him to give up his work.
On Nov. 14, 1900, he was married to Miss Myrtle Gilchrist. One son, Merwyn, was born to them. Mrs. Eaton died May 07, 1921. On June 22, 1931, the doctor was again married to Miss Grace Davis, who survives with the son Merwyn, who is an art instructor in the University of New York. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Thode and Miss Trix Eaton, both of Minneapolis, Minn., and a brother, Dr. Carl Eaton of Adams, Wis.
Dr. Eaton always took a keen interest in the affairs of the community, serving as mayor, councilman, school board member, and was the first president of the Lions club, a member of the Masonic fraternity, the Eastern Star and the Iowa Consistory of Scottish Rite.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Congressional church, conducted by the Rev. Ben Shaw. Music was furnished by Mrs. Carrie Slagle and Mrs. Jennie Howard, accompanied by Miss Helen Buckley.
Burial was in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
