Burial services were held Wednesday at Sacred Heart cemetery, Volga City for the Rev. Father Alex Hetherington, 70 who died Saturday at his home in Chariton. The Rev. D. T. Noonan officiated at the graveside, following a Requiem high mass offered at nine o'clock in Sacred Heart church for the repose of his soul.
The remains were taken from Chariton to St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque, where the Most Rev. Henry P. Rohlman, coadjutor archbishop of Dubuque celebrated a Requiem high mass at 10 o'clock Wednesday.
Father Hetherington was born in Ireland, November 02, 1875, the son of Arthur and Bridget McKernan Hetherington. He was educated at Mont Melleray and St. John's seminary, Waterford, Ireland where he was ordained in June 1890 by the Most Rev. Bishop Richard A. Sheehan.
For twenty-five years, he served as pastor at Volga City, and also at Wadena, a mission parish. During his pastorate, the church at Wadena was built and also the new church at Volga was erected in 1924 and dedicated in 1925.
He also served as pastor at Parkersburg and Riceville from where he retired in 1937. He had since made his home at Chariton.
