Funeral services for Michael Joseph Stence were held from the Witt funeral home to St. Joseph's Catholic church at 10 a.m. Monday. A solemn high mass was celebrated by the Rev. Fitzgerald ___ ___ sermon delivered by the ___ ____ McEnany of Garber.

_______ the eldest son of John and __ry Brazel Stence, was born January 20, 1867, near Elkader and had reached the age of 79 years, two months and two days. He engaged in farming at an early age. He was a member of the Elkader Court of Foresters for more than fifty years. The members attended the services in a body.

In the year 1910, on Nov. 22, at St. Michael's church, Elkport, he was married to Estella Goodsell. They farmed for ten years near Elkader and in 1920 moved to Elkport. He was in failing health for several years and on Oct. 19 suffered a nearly fatal heart attack; failing to regain his health. On Dec. 26, accompanied by his wife, he moved to the Arthur Crary home near St. Olaf,

Last Thursday he was taken by ambulance to Mercy hospital, Dubuque, where he died at 2 a.m. Friday. The immediate cause of his death was a heart block.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four sisters, Sister M. Regis of Fairbank, Mrs. Mary O'Brien of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Anna Wiley of Littleport, and Mrs. Catherine Crary; nine nephews and seven nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Martin and Raymond, and three sisters, Mrs. Ella Henry, Margaret and Stella.

Among friends and relatives who came from a distance were: The Rev. Father Phelan of Dubuque; Sisters M. Regis, M. Grace and M. Alicia, and Miss Elizabeth Schmit of Fairbank; Wm. Henry, Mrs. Kate O'Brien, Mrs. Rose O'Brien of Strawberry Point; the Misses Clara, Agnes, Esther and Alma Helbig of Dubuque; Mrs. Irene Eckart of Guttenberg; Mr. and Mrs. Phil Allen of Ames, and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Probert of Volga.

Pallbearers were Harold Downey, Leo Keleher, Matt Feeney, Harley Downey, Joe Hoover and Leo Boland.
