Funeral services for Herman Schoien were held from the Elgin Funeral home at 12:15 Tuesday afternoon to the Highland Lutheran church at 2:00 p.m., the Rev. A. O. Nesset officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

Herman Oscar, eldest son of Ole Schoien and his wife, Ellen Larson, was born in Rock county, Minn., Dec. 22, 1877 and died at the Postville Community hospital March 14, 1946 at the age of 68 years, two months and 20 days. He had submitted to an emergency operation for a ruptured appendix on March 2nd and had been making an apparently successful recovery when ambolism caused his death.

His boyhood was spent in Minnesota with the exception of a few years when the family lived in Wisconsin. He received is education in the rural schools and in an academy at Albert Lea, Minn. He was confirmed in the St. Olaf Lutheran church at Austin, Minn.

He began working as a carpenter in his youth. He came to Iowa about 1902 and continued his work as a contractor.

On August 14, 1913 he was united in marriage to Miss Alma Torkelson. Five children were born to them, Mrs. Ernestine Reavis, Irvin, Arlene, Corinne and a daughter who died at birth.

Following his marriage, Mr. Schoien began farming which, with the exception of five years, he continued until the time of his death.

Survivors are his wife, children, two grandchildren, Eleanor Frances and Franklin Duane Reavis, a brother M. C. Schoien of Hollywood, Calif., two sisters, Mrs. Annie Lantz and Mrs. Hannah Lantz, both of Elgin. His parents, brother Julius and sister Elizabeth preceded him in death.

Songs were sung at Elgin by Mrs. Steele and Mrs. Kohler and at the church by Adolph Benson of Elkader. The pallbearers were nephews of the deceased: Leslie, Elmer, Maynard, Walter, Arthur and Wilmer Lantz. Flower girls were Janice, Delores and Amy Lou Torkelson and Bonnie Lantz.
