GARNAVILLO: Sylvester J. Berns, age 39, died at Mercy hospital in Iowa City Thursday, Oct. 26.

Services were held Monday morning from the home to St. Joseph's Catholic church in Garnavillo. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery.

Mr. Berns was born Feb. 05, 1911, in Farmersburg township, the son of Herman and Anna Berns. He was married to Kathryn Wernke, Nov. 22, 1932, at Luxemburg. They lived on a farm until 1936 when they moved to Garnavillo where Mr. Berns operated a tavern.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Leroy (Phyllis) Dietrick of Garnavillo and Vergene at home; his mother, Mrs. Anna Berns of Garnavillo, one granddaughter, Yolanda Dietrick, a brother, Cyril of Farmersburg township, and seven sisters, Sister Mary Marcellus of Xavier hospital, Dubuque, Sister Mary Petra of Sacred Heart, Dubuque, Mrs. Herbert (Mary) Koopman of Garnavillo, Mrs. Francis (Isabel) Bortschellar of Oyens, Mrs. James (Anna) McTaggart, of Strawberry Point, and Misses Teresa and Eunice Berns of Garnavillo.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.
