Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Heise, 71, were held at the Congregational Christian church at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. J. H. Zerhusen, pastor of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church at Clayton Center officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery with the Order of the Eastern Star in charge at the grave.
Mrs. Heise died Monday morning, Aug. 14, at the Larson nursing home near St. Olaf, where she had been a patient for about a month. Mrs. Heise, who had been in failing health for the past year, was confined to her bed for only a few days prior to her death.
Martha (Mattie) Schoch, the daughter of Charles and Reka Soukow Schoch was born at Elkader, Iowa, November 18, 1878. She attended the Elkader School and the Francis Willard hospital of nursing in Chicago where she graduated in 1911. She practiced her profession until 1918, when she was united in marriage to Otto Heise. They lived at Winamac, Ind., until he died July 10, 1946. Mrs. Heise returned to Elkader and has since made her home with Miss Emma Hagensick.
She was a member of Charity Chapter No. 152, Elkader, and was a charter member of the Elkader Royal Neighbors of America, and the Congregational Christian church, Elkader.
Mrs. Heise is survived by one sister, Miss Louise Schoch of Dubuque. Preceding her in death besides her husband and parents were three brothers and three sisters; namely, Fred, Carl, and William Schoch, Mrs. W. C. (Rose) Monlux, Mrs. George (Ella) Lenth, and Minnie Schoch who died when a small child.
Pallbearers were: Arthur Hochhaus, George Hochhaus, Henry Matt, Charles Stiehl, Everett Hagensick, Alvin Vogt.
