GARBER: Funeral services were held in the St. John's church Sunday afternoon for Martin G. Thein. Services were conducted by Rev. Gaterman and interment was in Mt. Harmony cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were: Jas. McLane, Frank Smith, John Kuehl, Morris Bowman, August Ortman and George Chettinger. Pallbearers were: James Staub, Art Willman, Fred Wathen, Fred Schrader, Charles Waterman, and Winey Smith.
Son of Joseph L. and Minnie Thein, he was born near Garber on February 22, 1883, and was baptized when an infant.
He was united in marriage on November 26, 1913, to Melinda Winch at Dubuque. Two children were born to this union, of which one, a daughter, died in infancy.
Mr. Thein has been in failing health for several years with a heart ailment. He has been confined in bed for the past two weeks. He died July 24 at the age of 59 years, five months and two days. He has been an active citizen of this neighborhood. He was trustee of Elk township for the past 20 years and also director of Garber's Farmers Creamery for 20 years and president of the same for 16 years.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, one son, La Vern, one granddaughter, Louise, five brothers Frank of New Hampton, Joseph of Lamont, Fred of Garber, Charley of Strawberry Point, and Peter of Elkader; three sisters Rebecca Winch and Marie Jennings of Garber, and Pearl Smock of Edgewood. One brother, George, and two sisters, Gertrude and Elsie, preceded him in death.
