John Heiden, 55, of Farmersburg, died suddenly from a heart attack in his sleep Sunday morning, April 18.
He was the youngest son of John F. and Caroline Stade Heiden, being born in Read township, March 17, 1887. His parents moved to a farm in Wagner township when he was 7 years old. His father died when he was 12 years old. Two years later his brother left for the west coast, leaving him and his mother to operate the farm alone.
When he was 19 years old, his mother and sister moved to Farmersburg. He was employed on a farm for a short time, then as a carpenter and later as a painter, a trade which he followed until death.
He was an active member of the Masonic lodge, serving as Master in 1926-27 and as secretary at the present time, an office he held for the last 10 years. He was a member of the Farmersburg band since its organization in 1919 and took an active part in all community activities. He also held the office of assessor.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1899, his mother in 1935, and sisters, Mrs. Minnie Schmidt in 1923, Mrs. Anna Wilke in 1920, Mrs. Elsie Strien in 1918, and an infant sister many years ago. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ida Olvis of Luana, one brother, H. F. Heiden of Groveland, Calif., three nieces and three nephews.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. G. W. McMichael of Monticello and the Masonic lodge in charge. H. D. Brown of Elkader was in charge of the Masonic services. The Farmersburg band played appropriate music at the services.
Burial was in the Farmersburg and Wagner cemetery.
