Funeral services were held here Friday afternoon in the Witt funeral chapel for John G. Stemmer. Burial was made in the Communia cemetery with the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
Mr. Stemmer had died at five a.m. in the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. E. Shepherd in Waterloo of a heart ailment. At the time of his death he had reached the age of 67 years, eleven months and 20 days.
He was born at Communia, March 26, 1874, the son of Matthias and Catherine Stemmer. He spent his early boyhood in that community.
On April 08, 1896, he was united in marriage with Maude Irene Carpenter and they spent most of their wedded life in this county. Seven children were born to this union: Roland E., of Mukileto, Wash., now retired from active service in the U.S. Army; Mrs. W. E. Shepherd and Mrs. H. W. Bender, both of Waterloo; Herbert of Phoenix, Ore.; Mrs. J. L. Taylor, Northwood; Mrs. Frederick Ranson, Pismo, Calif., and John C. serving in the Army in New York City. Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
For the past 18 years Mr. Stemmer had been employed by the state highway commission. About the middle of January he was forced to give up his work because of the heart ailment. He entered a Waterloo hospital for treatment for ten days and for the last six weeks had been confined to bed in the home of his daughter.
The deceased leaves to mourn his departure, beside the forementioned children, his wife, one sister, Mrs. Fred Hochhaus of Edgewood and five grandchildren: Gordon J. Shepherd in the U.S. Navy; Gloria Bender, Jean Taylor; Roland Jr. Stemmer in the Army Air Corps and John Stemmer.
