Funeral services for John J. Whittle were held at the St. Mary's church Tuesday morning conducted by the Rev. Patrick J. Boyle. Burial was made in St. Joseph's cemetery at Elkader. The seven sons were casket bearers.
As a son of Joseph and Harriet Wilson Whittle he was born on a farm in Cox Creek township on Aug. 27, 1854 and died Sunday morning after an illness of several years. On March 27, 1883 he was married to Julia Cunningham at Elkader by Rev. J. J. Quigley. The first four and one-half years the home was made at Flandreau, S.D., returning to Iowa, they lived for many years on the Whittle homestead in Cox Creek township. In 1928 they retired from the farm and purchased a home in Strawberry Point where they have since resided. The golden wedding anniversary was celebrated in 1933. Mrs. Whittle died Dec. 18, 1941. He is survived by the following children: John, Sylvanus and Mrs. Hattie Matt, Strawberry Point; Clem, Communia; Emmet and Ambrose, Elkader; Alphonsus, Garnavillo; Mrs. Blanche Blankholm and Leo, Minneapolis, Minn., also twenty-nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
