Mrs. John Parsons, formerly Mattie Stacy of Elkader, daughter of Edward and Mary A. Stacy, died at her home in Volga Friday morning, Jan. 23, following a lingering illness.
She was born on a farm in Illinois August 01, 1852 and came with her parents at an early age to establish a home in Iowa on the farm one mile north of Volga.
At the age of seven she came to Elkader to make her home with her brother-in-law and sister, the late David and Mary Livingood, who reared and educated her. She completed the Elkader high school and College education.
At the age of 16 she began her profession as a teacher in the rural schools of Clayton county near Elkader, continuing her work in the city schools of Garnavillo, McGregor, Guttenberg and Volga.
While principal of the Volga schools she met and married John A. Parsons, April 17, 1884, continuing their residence here for nearly 58 years. Three children were born to this union: Atty. Mabel at home, Harry who died in infancy and Lulu a music instructor in Chicago city schools.
Her husband, two daughters, a nephew and niece, David Edward and Mattie Livingood, several other nieces and nephews are her survivors. Her parents, five sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.
She was an honored, respected teacher, mother and citizen. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Butler of the M.E. church. Interment was made in the Hill Crest cemetery, January 25. The casket bearers were Thomas Lendman, Fred Rinkert, Robert Duff, William Hoskyns, Guy Whitford and Delos Crain.
