Clayton County Register, 27 December 1945.
Death rode the highway between McGregor and Marquette Tuesday evening as Clayton county added one more to the holiday list of traffic fatalities throughout the nation. Henry Brookover, 70, of Lancaster, Wis., was killed at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit by a car driven by Mrs. E. H. Hamann, McGregor
The victim and his brother, Joe Brookover, 77, were walking on the pavement from Marquette to McGregor where they hoped to spend the night after missing their train to Turkey River. The road was icy, and another car met the one driven by Mrs. Hamann at the point where she came upon the two men whom she did not see until the last moment. Deep snow made it impossible for the Wisconsin men to move off to the shoulder.
The elder Brookover sustained slight inuries. Both men were residents of a Lancaster Old People's home.
