Funeral services were held last Wednesday for George Weir, 68, who died early Sunday morning at his farm home south of McGregor after a short illness.
The services were held at the home of his son, Capt. William Weir, with the Rev. Paxton Smith officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove cemetery.
He was born March 27, 1887, in Allamakee county, one of five children born to William and Nancy Weir. He spent most of his boyhood around McGregor except for short intervals in New Mexico, North Dakota, and on farms near Monona and Lansing. At one time he went down the Mississippi on a houseboat and worked for a while in Tennessee.
Since his youth he has always been active on the river with a boat livery, commercial fishing and clamming. He was married to Florence Duerr in 1907 and moved to his farm south of town.
He is survived by his widow, two sons, Capt. William, stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., and Raymond of McGregor; two half-sisters and a half-brother.
