Funeral services for Mrs. Albert Allen, 70, lifelong resident of Clayton county who died unexpectedly at her home here shortly before noon on Thursday, July 26, were held from the home at 1:30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon and from the Congregational Christian church at 2 p.m. The Rev. George M. Richter, pastor, officiated. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
Nettie Hirsch, the daughter of John and Mary Leibrand Hirsch, was born June 17, 1875, on a farm near McGregor, where she spent most of her childhood. She received her education in the rural schools of the county. On May 26, 1897, she was married to Albert Allen at McGregor, Iowa, where they lived until 1901, when they moved to Elkader, which has since been their home.
Mrs. Allen was a member of the Royal neighbors, and Charity chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, of Elkader, which she served for two years as worthy matron.
She has been a member of the Congregational Christian church for 37 years and served as Sunday school teacher, president of the Ladies Guild and as deaconess. Last January, she was named a deaconess emeritus in recognition of her many years of service.
She is survived by two sons, Raymond H. Allen, of Allen Motor Company of Cedar Rapids, and Lieutenant Alvin W. Allen of the United States Naval Air Station at Alameda, Calif., and who, with his wife and little daughter Julie resides at Alameda, Calif.; a son-in-law Frank Chapman, and his son, Allen Ray Chapman, of Boise, Idaho; one sister, Mrs. George Wetter, Orchard, Iowa; and one brother Will Hirsch, of Dubuque.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died Nov. 06, 1940, and a daughter, Mrs. Maurine Chapman, who died Sept. 13, 1944, also two brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers were: H. M. Wolf, G.J. Graf, E. W. Carlsen, R. L. Jipson, J. W. Downie and A. A. Schultz.
