Sgt. Otto J. Doeppke, who had been reported missing in action April 05, 1944, has now been reported killed in action in Rumania on that date. His wife, Mrs. Lucille L. Doeppke, received the following telegram from the War Department yesterday:
"I am deeply distressed to inform you corrected report just received states your husband, Sgt. Otto J. Doeppke, who was previously reported as missing in action, was killed in action on 05 April 1944 in Rumania. The Secretary of War asks that I express his deep sympathy in your loss, and his regret that unavailable circumstances made necessary the unusual lapse of time in reporting your husband's death to you. Confirming letter follows. Dunlop, acting the Adjutant General."
Sergeant Doeppke, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Doeppke of Clayton Center, was born in Elkader May 26, 1923. He received his education in the Clayton Center school and Elkader high school. He entered the service an. 07, 1943, and was stationed at Langley Field, Va., before he was sent overseas as a tail gunner on a Liberator bomber.
Survivors, besides his parents, are his wife and daughter, Teddy Lou, and a sister, Mrs. Vernon Knapp of Elkader.
