Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 02, at Farmersburg for Mrs. Oina Mathews, who died Jan. 30 at Prairie du Chien, Wis.
Oina Belle Layton, one of the three children of Joseph and Matilda Layton, was born Oct. 19, 1864, in Adamsville, Mich. She came to Iowa with her parents and the family settled on a farm in Highland township. For a number of years she taught in the rural schools.
She was married to James Mathews of Farmersburg, on Oct. 19, 1884. To this union five children were born, James L.; Ruth, Mrs. Louis Radloff of Farmersburg; Gladys, Mrs. Wm. Reardon of Farmersburg.
Her husband and one son, Glen, preceded her in death, the latter having died in France in 1918. She is survived by four children, 10 Grandchildren, four of whom are in the armed services, two great-grandchildren, and three step-children, Cora, Mrs. C. E. Witt, of Monona; Bert of Oelwein; and Dora, Mrs. L. Gg. Lehman, of Elgin.
At the time of her death Mrs. Mathews was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and of the Service Star Legion of Elkader, and a charter member of the Red Cross and Royal Neighbors of Farmersburg.
