Funeral services for Thor Herbranson, a life-long resident of Clayton County, who died at the LaCrosse, Lutheran hospital, at LaCrosse, Wis., Nov. 15, were held from the home here at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Nov. 19, and at the Norway Lutheran church at 2 o'clock. Mr. Herbranson had been in failing health for several years but the direct cause of his death was bronchial pneumonia.
Thor Herbranson was born in Wagner township, Clayton county, Dec. 15, 1862, the son of Ole and Sigrid Herbranson and had reached the age of 81 years, 11 months at the time of death.
His boyhood years were spent on the farm of his parents in Wagner township. Later he lived at Preston, Minn., and Decorah, Ia., returning to the Herbranson farm in 1906 where he lived until coming to Elkader in 1941 where he had since made his home.
Mr. Herbranson received his education in the rural schools in Wagner township. He was a member of the Lutheran church having been confirmed by the Rev. Ole Waldeland and baptized by the Rev. O. J. Hyort of the Norway Lutheran church.
His father helped build the first Norwegian church in America 101 years ago, The Muskego church in Wisconsin.
Mr. Herbranson is survived by three sisters, Emma, Gunhild and Johanna Herbranson, all of Elkader. He was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.
Pallbearers were Ole Embretson, Thomas Peterson, Kenneth Hellum, Clarence Anderson, Theodore and Mellian Loftsgard.
Relatives from a distance who attended the services were: Maurice Knudtson, of Kit Carson, Colo.; Mr. and Mrs. M. V. Loftsgard and Iona, Miss Sophia Loftsgard, all of Postville; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Amundson and Mrs. Henry Olson, of Clermont, Ia,; Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Loftsgard, Mrs. H. L. Loftsgard and Sharon, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Nelson and Mrs. Mervin Reierson all of Elgin; Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Johanningmeier of Monona.
