Judge Walter L. Eichendorf, 55, district court judge here for the past 18 years, died at his home in McGregor early Friday morning. He had been confined to his home since his recent return from Rochester, Minn., where he had been in the hospital for six weeks following a year of poor health. He had not been in Elkader since early in August.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Eichendorf home in McGregor, the Rev. Paxton Smith of the Congregational church officiating, assisted by Bezer Lodge No. 135 A.F. & A.M. of McGregor, an escort of Knights Templar from Decorah and the McGregor American Legion post. Burial was in Pleasant Grove cemetery.

Judge Eichendorf was born in McGregor in 1889, was graduated from McGregor high school in 1907, and received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1912. He began his law practice in Lake Mills, Iowa, and then came to McGregor where he entered law practice with the late E. Leslie Spaulding, taking over the office and library of the former Congressman, Thomas Updergraff. Mr. Eichendorf served in World War I and continued his practice following the war. He served as Clayton county attorney and held numerous positions of importance in the county, including the presidencies of the Clayton County Bar association and the thirteenth judicial district. He has been local commander of the Mcgregor Legion post, as well as holding other district legion offices. He became judge of the 13th Judicial district in 1926 and has been on the bench continuously since.

Judge Eichendorf is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Bergman; a daughter, Betty Jeanne; a brother, Harry, of McGregor; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Reynolds, Rockwell City, and an uncle, August Kranert, of McGregor.
