MCGREGOR: Capt. William W. Henthorne, 24, of Marquette was killed at Myithyina in Burma, June 15, according to a telegram received from the war department Friday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Henthorne. The telegram stated that an explanation letter from New Guinea would follow.
A graduate of Marquette High School, Capt. Henthorne received his degree from the school of journalism and second lieutenant's commission from the University of Iowa in 1942. He was called to military duty at once at Fort Benning. He was promoted to first lieutenant Oct. 30, 1942, and to his captaincy June 29, 1943. Following that promotion he was sent to Yale university where he studied the Chinese language in a special course preparing him to train Chinese soldiers. Upon completion of that course Dec. 01, he came home on leave to be married Dec. 05, 1943, to Miss Betty Bickel, daughter of Mrs. Doii E. Bickel of McGregor.
Following a short honeymoon, Capt. Henthorne reported to Greenville, where Mrs. Henthorne was with him a few weeks before returning to her senior studies at the University of Iowa. Early in the spring Capt. Henthorne was sent overseas where he was stationed first in India.
His wife, Betty Bickel Henthorne, is now in Estes Park, Col., with her mother, where she received the news of her husband's death.
Captain Henthorne's father is a railroad man, whose run is the Elkader branch of the Milwaukee road.
