Funeral services for William P. Uriell, 81, a native and life-long resident of Read township, were held at St. Joseph's church at Garnavillo Saturday morning. He died at his home in Garnavillo after an illness of a year. The direct cause of his death was a stroke.
Mr. Uriell was born Sept. 11, 1862, in Read township, the son of James and Sarah Schulte Uriell, who were both natives of Read township.
He was married Sept. 28, 1887, to Anna M. Kann in Garnavillo. They lived in Read township until 1937, when they moved to Garnavillo to make their home with their son Frank and family. Mrs. Uriell died in 1939, shortly after the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. Uriell was a farmer for 40 years. He is survived by one son, Frank, of Garnavillo; three daughters, Mrs. Ben Meyers of Elkader, Mrs. Clarence Berns of Manitoba, Canada, Mrs. Kenneth McLane of Elkader. Three sons preceded him in death; Gregory J. of Guttenberg, who died on the day before his father did, Jerome and Sylvanis. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother, Joe of Eklader and five sisters, Mrs. Mollie Kann of Minot, N.D., Mrs. Cecelia Kelleher of Elkader, Mrs. Ella Glennon of Rochester, Minn., the Misses Sarah and Regina Uriell of Elkader. Mrs. Kate Regan preceded her brother in death.
Mr. Uriell was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church in Garnavillo. Rev. L. C. Iekel officiated at the mass of requiem and burial was made in the Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Eglseder, Sylvester Berns, Donald Stoeffler, Wm. Wille, A. H. Stickford and E. A. Kregel.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Feldman, Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kainz, Guttenberg; Mr. and Mrs. William Carson, Cedar Rapids; LeRoy Meyers, Three Rivers, Mich.; Pvt. John Uriell, Little Rock, Ark.; Mrs. Floyd Dittmer, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Agnes Downey, Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dinan, West Union; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meyers, Volga City.
