Mrs. Martha Russell, 81, a lifelong resident of Boardman township, died suddenly Sunday morning, April 16, at the home of her sister, Mrs. U. S. Clark, following a year's illness of a heart disease.
Funeral services were held from the Witt funeral chapel at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. George Richter officiating. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
Martha M. Mitchell was born on a farm in Boardman township, Nov. 10, 1862, the daughter of Daniel and Christine Mitchell. She received her education in the rural schools near her home. Nov. 2_, 1879, she was married to James Russell at Elkader, where they lived for several years, following which they moved to a farm a mile south of Elkader which has since been their home.
Surviving are one son, Joe, on the home farm; three sisters, Mrs. U. S. Clark of Elkader, Mrs. Lorenzo Marlette of Marquette, and Mrs. Mary Edwards of Cherryvale, Kan., and two grandsons, Lloyd Russell in training at Farragut, Ida., and Glen Russell in defense work in California. Her husband and one daughter, Julia, preceded her in death.
Pallbearers were Harry Kelleher, J. J. Tayek, Tom Garaghty, Henry Wolf, Adolph Benson and L. D. Dittmer.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were: Mrs. Cordine Russell, Mr. and Mrs. Leburn Russell of Fredericksburg; Miss Fern Hood and Mrs. Louise Lemke of Fredericksburg; Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo Marlette of McGregor; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Russell of Anamosa; Mrs. Lucy Kennedy of Chicago; Mrs. E. E. Aarvig of Story City; Mrs. Joe Russell and Mrs. Lloyd Russell of Mason City.
