Maurice Francis Minihan, son of the late Maurice and Mary Sheehan Minihan, was born Sept. 09, 1890, and died March 05, 1944. Death was due to a complication following surgery.
He was one of a family of eight. Preceding him in death were a brother, Michael, and a sister, Agnes. Surviving are two brothers, Patick and Martin, three sisters, Mrs. Katie Cox, Mrs. Ella Van Besian and Irene Minihan.
Mr. Minihan grew to young manhood on the farm near Elgin, later moving to Volga, where he became interested in the business, professional and social interests of the community. He received his education in the local public schools and the Oelwein Business college.
He was a member of the A.E.F. in World War I, serving with the Eighty-Eighth Division, and saw action in France in the Alsace sector. Returning to this country, he received an honorable discharge in June, 1919. He was a member of the Elgin post of the American Legion.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 09, at Sacred Heart Catholic church in Volga, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. D. T. Noonan. Military rites were performed by the Elgin post of the American Legion. Casket bearers were T. C. Hurley, Martin Hanson, Will Orr, Frank O'Brien, Forrest Humbert and M. J. Martin. Interment was in Sacred Heart cemetery.
Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: George and Louise Cassutt, Miss Hannah Minihan, Mrs. Harry Keleher, and Mrs. Josephine Dunn of Elkader; Mrs. Frank Leehy and son Joseph, Mr. and Mrs. Don Burke, Will Sheehy, Clermont; and Miss Dorothy Minihan, Rochester, Minn.
