The death of Edwin W. Chase occurred about 1:00 a.m., on Monday Aug. 27, 1923, at his home in this city. The PRESS last week mentioned that he had been prostrated by a stroke of paralysis, on Wednesday night. He was unconscious when found on the floor of the kitchen of his home about eight o'clock Thursday morning, and he did not regain consciousness. J.F. Groth saw him about 9:30 the previous evening driving his horse in the alley in the rear of the barn where the horse is kept. It is probable that after unhitching the horse and caring for him that Mr. Chase went home and was prostrated shortly after entering the house, for when found he was dressed as was habitual with him during the day.

Dr. Beyer attended him and he was cared for by a trained nurse. His brother Dr. H.H. Chase, of LaCrosse, came Thursday afternoon, as did his sister, Mrs. J.E. Tibbetts of Washington, D.C. Later, Miss Ama Bruening, who had made her home for eight years with Mr. and Mrs. Chase, and who was attending school at Cedar Falls, arrived on Saturday.

W.W. Bennett of Laone, Wis., brother-in-law; George Tenney and daughter of Champaign, Ill, and Mrs. Ishmael of Cassville, also came to attend the funeral services.

The deceased was born June 14, 1856, near De Soto, Wis., his parents having been Arvin and Ann Chase. His marriage to Rexie Bennett occurred Nov. 27 1888, at Prairie du Chien, Wis. They came from Cassville, Wis., to reside in Guttenberg in 1891, and since then residing here until their death, Mrs. Chase passing about two years ago.

Mr. Chase was an excellent photographer, which business he followed actively until the last. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him.

The funeral occurred on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 1923, at the house, and was conducted by Rev. D.D. Welch. At the grave the rites of the Masonic fraternity of the members of which there was a large attendance, were observed, G.W. Hunt conducting the same, Mr. Chase having been a member of Prairie La Port lodge, A.F. and A.M., No. 147, as well as of Pearl Chapter, O.E.S., No. 143. He was also a member of the De Molay Consistory No. 1 of Clinton, Iowa, and on Tuesday night at the house the funeral rites of the Knights Cadosh were exemplified by Dr. Pohle and J.P. Eckart, the same being performed at midnight.

The body was laid to rest in the City Cemetery. The pall bearers were Alpheus Rockwell, George Kluth, C.P. Luther, Dr. E.J. Pohle, J.P. Eckart and J.H. Horsch. The floral offerings were numerous and very beautiful.
