Oswald Handke, 63, of Ceres, was the first highway fatality in the county in 1944. He was fatally injured Monday evening when the auto he was driving collided head-on with a truck loaded with hogs driven by Vallie Gottschalk of Elkader. Mr. Handke suffered a broken neck.
The accident occurred about four and one-half miles northwest of Guttenberg on highway 52 about 7:15 p.m. The victim was taken to a physician's office in Guttenberg, where he died about a half hour after the accident.
Mr. Handke is survived by his wife, three sons, Albert in the Army Air Corps in Texas, Eddie in the Army in New Guinea, Lawrence at Cherokee; five daughters, Mrs. Oliver Schoulte of National; Mrs. Fred Engler of Clayton, Mrs. Otto Rantzow of Spokane, Wash., and Dolores and Eleanor at home.
